Surviving a natural disaster is one of the most common news stories we see occurring close to home on a fairly regular basis in the United States. Whether it is storms generating hurricane force winds, quakes striking along the San Andreas fault lines beneath California, or torrential tropical storms causing flash flooding to destroy our way of life, we’ve seen too many times that this can turn a comfortable lifestyle into a living nightmare in the blink of an eye.
Why then, are there not more Preppers around, choosing to protect themselves against the actions of Mother Nature? All it takes is simple steps and the meticulous planning of what to do when she strikes, and your family can be far better placed to weather the storm, if you’ll excuse the pun.
Earthquakes don’t strike often, but when they do, have the potential to bring down buildings, open up the ground and cause life threatening hazards to appear from nowhere. If the epicenter is positioned in the sea, or simply near the coast, you can find a wall of water speeding towards land, as a tsunami prepares to flatten anything in its path. Would you know how to give yourself and your loved ones the best chance of seeing the danger through?
Flooding from tsunamis or extreme rainfall can be more deadly than the ground shaking. Just twenty five centimeters of flood water can create a strong enough current to drag a fit and healthy adult away, so it’s a very small amount of flooding that would cause a serious danger to children. Once you’re taken from your feet, it’s unlikely you’ll regain control until the water has decided your fate for you, so it’s a lottery whether you’ll see another day. When the water comes, you’ll need to know what to do – our flash flood guide is here to help.
Hurricanes are relatively common in the southern States, yet still people choose to ignore warnings when they are forecast. Even though we’ve all heard of the calm of the eye of a hurricane, you still see the inevitable death toll rise when the eye makes landfall and unsuspecting residents venture out in the belief that the storm threat is over. How quickly the winds of fate change and prevent a safe return. For your hurricane prep, see our detailed Preppers manual.
Mother Nature is a fickle character, she brings us such beauty in the world, yet can turn in an instant, unleashing the most powerful forces know to mankind upon us. When those moments happen, you don’t have long to respond. Having your well defined plan in place can literally be the difference between life and death, so it’s important to not only make the plans, but rehearse them and commit them to memory. Ensure children know what they need to do, and where they need to be. Also take time to consider how they should stay safe during school time, when you’re not there to protect and guide them – you can’t always rely on their teacher to stay calm and follow a well planned strategy.
